My grandmother mentioned that there's some important city elections coming up. It'd be nice to see the valued opinions of this board weigh in. It might even inspire me to register to vote.

the elections are nearly fixed rawlings-blake will probably win mayor bcuz she has the financial backing coupled with two candidates that are sure to split the vote in rolley and pugh, i personally would like to see someone win whom is not within the political machine...the city council races are for the most part fixed as well people here seem to keep voting for the same people based on their family political dynasties like the welchs and conaways, even though these candidates districts look worse then they did when these politicians took over

I would too, but there's no way I would vote for Rolley, not after that asinine "$1 bullet tax" idea (stolen from Chris Rock).

I actually met Rawlings-Blake and she is miles better than her predecessor (Dixon).

Can I just generally advocate getting registered to vote? There is really nothing to lose by doing so.

I urge everyone to register and vote. If you believe political corruption is endemic in Baltimore I likewise urge you to avoid voting for anyone named Conaway, Curran, Branch, Mitchell, Cardin, Murphy, D'Adamo, Welch or Rawlings. Not everyone of them may be running this cycle, but believe me you will see those names on ballots over and over again if you stick around town. They are all members of Baltimore's longtime political power-broker families and are largely responsible for the city's decades long slide into the crapper. I'll also throw city council president Bernard C. "Jack" Young in there, as he is just so ham-fistedly sleazy and doesn't even live in Baltimore.

Where are good sources of information to educate myself on who to vote for? I'm not going to register if I'm just randomly checking boxes and unknowingly electing the wrong people.

The League of Women Voters publishes a candidate guide for each election and it is very helpful. Try this link; there is a link on the main page to the 2011 Baltimore City election.
