All of the years I have been in Baltimore, I have never been to this place. Yet, it came up twice last week while I was away. I met a family who were in Baltimore visiting relatives and they went to this place for dinner-simple coney island hot dogs and sliders. They raved about the place.
Then two days later, I'm watching the Food Channel and woe and behold, there is a show (don't remember the name of it) and they were at the same place this family went to. It turns out I live pretty close to it. It's on Eastern in Highlandtown.

Baltimore's Best Hot Dogs

Why the post? I was wondering if anyone who reads these threads has been there?

Lifetime Baltimorean, and I had never heard of it until I saw it on "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" last week. I'll have to check it out next time I'm on that side of the Harbor Tunnel.

I too was surprised to see the old G&A featured on cable. The place has a walk back in time to a '30's/'40's lunch counter ambiance. Used to go there frequently when I was a student in late '80's/early 'nineties. Not because the dogs were so good (they weren't), but because .90 for two dogs and a Coke was about all I could afford then. Also consumed a hell of a lot of $1.00/meatball subs from the "Nice 'n' Easy" carryout on South Broadway (really not bad at all). A word to the wise in re the G&A: nearby Hopkins Bayview has several methadone clinics, and the diner is a well-used spot for their clients to buy and sell pills to "boost" their meth.

I lived a couple blocks away for awhile, but only went there once. I actually thought the burgers were better than the hot dogs. For those thinking of visiting, keep in mind that like a lot of other places in Highlandtown, they are closed on Sunday (I found out the hard way).

That episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives is pretty old though. I think I mentioned this in another food thread a little while ago, but there were actually quite a few area places on DDD...DiPasquale's, also in Highlandtown (very good Italian shop); Broadway Diner (not really sure what was so special about it but it is a decent diner); and Chap's Pit Beef (never made it there).

We went after seeing this place featured on DDD on Food Network...found it to be nothing special, overcrowded, and you SURELY won't be getting 2 dogs and a coke for $.90. Buy a pack of Nathan's dogs & grill 'em, you'll enjoy that more.

i have been a loyal customer to a lot of older establishments in the highlandtown area. I visit the G&A and Depasquales and the recently closed eastern house on a weekly basis. These places are the staples in the neighborghood. I can say one thing, I've never been to the G&A or Depasquales and seen any drunk people or addicts nodding out at either place. I'm quite sure it's the one thing that is not tolerated in these older establishments. That and there great food and service is what has stood the test of time. As a matter of fact, im craving a dog right now!

Great local joint. The fries with gravy are a must.

I finally got to G and A. The patrons were families, working people. It was about 4 in the afternoon on a weekday. I'll visit it again. The food was fine; although I didn't expect a whole lot.

That is quite an endorsement for a Baltimore establishment-no drunks or addicts nodding off in the corner. I may have to visit to confirm.
