So that's it, here I am. I am a French Canadian Ph.D. student scientist and I found a post-doc position in Johns Hopkins Hospital for fall 2012.

I will move from Sherbrooke, a small French-speaking town (170K) to Baltimore.

I visited Baltimore to meet my future team in Hopkins but did not walk more than 4-5 streets away from my hotel, which was in the heart of the harbor. So I thought Baltimore was lively while pretty quiet, with some vintage industrial charm. I know, however, that this feeling may be biased by the fact that Fell's Point may not be the real Baltimore anymore with tourists and restaurants.

I will move with wife and kids (2 girls aged 2 and 5) and will earn all the money for the family for at least our first year in Baltimore. So here are my questions:

1. Could you suggest more family-suitable neighborhoods for us to live? I am limited by public transportation though. actually, I would like to be within 45 minutes of the hospital by metro or bus. So I think that anything outside the Beltway is excluded. A good school is also a factor.

2. We own a house in Canada with 3 small bedrooms and 1.5 baths. We will sell it and look for buying a house in Baltimore. I did some research already, and I think we could be able to find a nice renovated townhome with 3-4 beds for 200-250K. Any thoughts? Am I too optimistic?

3. Will we go to DC every weekend to find something to do with our kids or is there good variety for families in Baltimore in terms of activities?
