Hi, I am a single mom with 2 young boys; ages 4 and 5 and will be moving to Maryland to work as a civilian at Fort Meade. I am moving from El Paso Texas and have never lived in a big city such as Baltimore before. Need help with finding an affordable 2 bedroom apartment in a safe, good, neighborhood, or suburb area that is close to the base. I was also interested in any information about preschool/schools in the area that will be close to the base. Thanks for any help/ideas!

Fort Meade is not in Baltimore, and not really close. It is in Anne Arundel County. Try looking at the apartment ratings sites (or Realtor dot com) around Odenton, Millersville, Crofton. For a good school system in Howard County, try (parts of) Laurel, Jessup or Elkridge. The Howard County areas may be more expensive though, and a price shock compared to El Paso.

Here's a couple more hints:
1. Re-post your question in the general Maryland forum to get more answers. The Baltimore forum is mostly just Baltimore.
2. Search the forum, as many people have been asking about safe neighborhoods near Ft. Meade. Lots of people are relocating because of BRAC. Note that there are mixed opinions on Severn, but it is very close to Ft. Meade.
3. Searching the forum will also probably turn up information on pre-schools.

The easiest place to move to may be Columbia which does offer an instant community. Columbia is divided into nine villages, all of which are a mix of apartments, houses and townhouses, and each village has its own pools, playgrounds, shopping areas and community centers. Parts of Columbia are surprisingly affordable and the Howard County schools are well regarded.

I agree, Howard County is a bit more expensive but you will be in a safe area with great schools, shopping and within a 15-20 minute commute to the base from numerous Eastern sections of Howard County. How much are you looking to spend? Check out the outer edge of Columbia near Elkridge. Look at apartments nearing the intersection of Rt108 and Rt175.
