Historical Elliott City is beautiful for it's downtown...but just across the way in Oella, is equally beautiful. Not for it's downtown, but for it's old historical homes and the geography - hills and houses being built in and on hills, lots of woods, etc.

What other areas around Baltimore (or going towards DC) are like that?

I've mentioned Dickeyville in NW Baltimore, but I don't know anything else like these areas.

BTW, anyone thinking of moving to Oella should be aware there is a slaughterhouse. Live animals are trucked in, the last I knew, and it might be disturbing.

Yeah dickeyville only, so far as I know. I used to live near dickeyville and I liked it but I there are no businesses of any utility there or nearby. Mt Washington is also hilly and surrounds an old mill (now a whole foods and other shops) and would be better to live in, IMHO. Though not if commuting to dc.

Mount Washington actually isn't too bad for commuting to DC if you take the MARC train. I did it for 2.5 years. The light rail can take you to Penn Station. Driving is even faster; because I-83 is right there, you can get to Penn Station in about 8 minutes.

Trueths J.W. Treuth & Sons, Meat Packers in Baltimore, Maryland
I miss having a real butcher so convenient as when I lived out that way.

Not directly - it'll take you to Mt Royal then it's a few blocks walk to Penn, or you can wait for the once-per-century Penn-Camden shuttle going the other way.

But yeah driving there is simple.

True, but it's less than a 5 minute walk. There is usually a small group of DC commuters walking together from Mt. Royal to Penn Station.

That's one of the things I love about Oella. The Breadery bakery and the butcher shop right on the same street. During the summer I can almost avoid the grocery store completely by hitting the farmers markets.
