I knew Fells Point offer a large number of shops, bars, and restaurants, but felt more like a tourist section than actually living there day in and day out.
I don't feel like Fells is a tourist section at all.

Maybe not touristy, but I guess especially on weekends, just too many people getting out and about given all the shops, restaurants, etc. A nice area, just not a place we could see ourselves living based on what we are looking for.

Fells is a great place, but just so crowded every weekend, which makes parking impossible. Fells is also not as nice for such a large area as Canton or Federal Hill is. Fed Hill/SoBo is basically a whole protected peninsula of completely safe neighborhoods. Federal Hill has a lot to do, but also has a true neighborhood feel. With that said, I'm going to Fells for Lunch today.

I wouldn't say Federal Hill and South Baltimore (and even Locust Point) are completely safe. They are relatively safe compared to other neighborhoods in the city, but one still needs to be aware that muggings, burglaries, car break-ins, etc. can and do happen there.

I guess that was a noticeable difference that Federal Hill had more of a neighborhood feel to it, while Fells Point would appeal more to me for dining. One thing that did surprise me was how each neighborhood had a distinctive feel to it, almost like several little cities within Baltimore City.

You raise an interesting point! We were surprised how quickly the surroundings would change, but going to the East side of 83 we weren't expecting.

Things happen sure, but tell me a place where they don't. My parents live in a nice neighborhood in Arnold, and you wouldn't believe some of the stuff that happens there. It's a place I feel completely comfortable all the time, and Locust Point is the 6th safest urban neighborhood in America according to crime stats.

There are probably 30k people who live on the south peninsula, if a handful of people robbed at gunpoint every year, I'll play those odds till the day I die.

The police are also cracking down around here big time lately. There are serious efforts going on to get rid of the remaining screwballs in the area, and it's working. I've seen it in full effect the last two nights.

Yeah, that is sort of the Charm City aspect of it, definitely a city of communities. Cool thing about many of the cool communities is they are linked by the Charm City Circulator, and If you love walking, you can go from Fells to Fed Hill to Mt. Vernon, and take a cab, water taxi, or Circulator when you get tired.

That's true. I'm lucky in that I live on a side street(court) where I can park my car in front of my house 99% of the time. I enjoy the area though. It can get crowded but there's always plenty of dive bars to hide out in and I love being only a few blocks from the water.
