An article on the futures of Lake Guilford, Ashburton, Druid Hill. It would be wonderful to keep Druid Hill as a recreational lake which could actually promote Res Hill.. Paddleboats could be a huge boost along with other things such as remote control boats and pontoon though.. that may be more of a stretch.....Not sure about the cost to maintain it if it is strictly recreational though...perfect time for parks for people or the Friends of Druid Hill, the Zoo, and even the Res Hill Improvement group to step up...Did I miss something or was Lake Montebello omitted???

From the article: "A reservoir in Towson and another near Lake Montebello currently are being swapped for tanks. (Lake Montebello itself is a holding reservoir for untreated water.)"

I guess Montebello will remain as is.

Default No boats on Druid Lake

I have seen some pictures of Victorian boating in Druid Hill Park. That won't be coming back to today's lake, though, because it is part of the city's drinking water system. Ditto for Ashburton & others.

The article in The Sun indicates that they are retiring Druid Hill Lake as a reservoir...and that some would like to see it used for rec purposes as opposed to being drained.. I for one would not want to see it drained if at all possible.. Seems like the folks in Guilford dont mind if theirs goes away because they will get a new multi purpose field.. Ashburton has yet to weigh in on theirs......

Default Will Mayor Rawlings-Blake rise to the occasion?

My apologies; I had not read The Sun story.

Anyway, did you know that there once was a campaign to build a Civic Center (today's Arena) in Druid Hill Park? William Donald Schaefer, in alliance with such black leaders as Verda Welcome, put a stop to it. This earned him brownie points that advanced his political career.

Mayor Rawlings-Blake now has a splendid opportunity to revisit this question. Since the lake exists, it could be used for underground parking with little or no additional excavation. And since we already have a money-losing convention center, why not build a casino in Druid Hill Park over the lake! We could name it after her.

That would be so nice because her daddy's name is already on the Druid Hill conservatory. A little known fact is that that self-same conservatory was originally named for Mayor William Donald Schaefer!

I would hope that in this case that she wouldnt rise to the occasion for that use I like Druid Hill as a Lake and think with the new Park for People Headquarters, the Zoo, the bike trails etc that it could be just as wonderful a park as Patterson Park and spur the redevelopment of the surrounding neighborhoods. Woodberry on the north and Remington on the east are already very solid.. Res Hill is stable and the area around Mondawmin is as well... With just a little "push" they can be strenghtened and rebound quite nicely and connect with Bolton Hill, MICA, and Mt Vernon. They could always name the park Druid-Rawling Park or Druid-Rawlings Lake... Druid Rawlings Boat House/Ramp...though her political foes would HOWL....
