I'll be visiting Baltimore next month. I am allergic to shellfish, so authentic crab cakes are out of the question. Does anyone know of a place that makes imitation crab cakes? Also, what's a good place to immerse myself with the locals?

"Imitation" crab is still fish based. Stick with Chicken Fettucine.

I can eat imitation crabmeat without a problem. It's the real stuff that can kill me.

I doubt you'll find a Maryland restaurant (maybe a chain like Applebee's might) that sells imitation crab.

I don't think you'll find a place in MD that sells that. Even the cheap crabcakes at Lexington Market have a little lump in them.

I think you're looking for a coddie, which is a fish cake. Eat it between two saltines with some mustard. Attman's Deli is a good bet for coddies.

The best place to get the local flavor is the Lexington Market. But you probably won't find imitation crab-cakes. The fish sandwich sounds like a good idea, but be careful of the frying oil if they fry everything in the same place.

Make your own imitation crab cakes with the surimi crab stick stuff using the Old Bay Crab Cake recipe on the can.

Do you have an iodine allergy? Can you eat oysters and clams? My dad is allergivc to iodine, makes his throat close up, but can eat oysters no problem.

There's a wierd mix of food that sets me off. For one thing I have oral allergy syndrome, so I have to be careful about what fruits and vegetables I eat. Fish I don't have a problem, but any shellfish I can't do. I think the allergy that surprised me the most was frogs legs.

I realize that I can make imitation crab cakes at home, but what's the point to visiting Bawlmer if I can't enjoy a crab cake while washing it down with a Natty Boh?

The point is that you won't get ill and die!

You wouldn't go to Paris and expect to find imitation croissants. You wouldn't go to Louisiana and expect to find imitation gumbo.

Other places in the US may serve imitation Maryland crab cakes because they aren't Maryland.

You should try the coddies though. You can feel even cooler washing them down with Boh because they are an even more obscure Baltimore-only food.
