Hello,

I currently live in the DC metro area but am working in Baltimore around the neighborhood I understand is called Locust Point. I'd clearly like to move closer however given the area my usual assets like Rent.com and such are failing. During my typical walks to lunch I've noticed that the neighborhood probably isn't their prime market though certainly not an area I feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

I'm looking for a resource that can help me find a new home (rental preferred but open to purchase) within a reasonable (perhaps bike travel or water taxi) distance from my job.

Honestly looking at stats it looks like neighborhoods close to the areas near the harbor on all sides seem to be relatively low crime and since I've worked in the area I can't argue with the "Charm City" moniker I see everywhere.

So where does one find rental properties in the local area? It isn't exactly a Rent.com area and I am open to areas like fed hill and canton but they seem to be a little more pricey. I can afford it but would rather be more affordable. With reasonable parking since I have a car and motorcycle.

I could be misguided on the neighborhoods that would be decent. I just want a short commute with a decent neighborhood and not a terrible parking situation.

Try the Baltimore Sun classifieds for several search options: Apartments for Rent in South Baltimore | Apartment in South Baltimore*Maryland

McHenry Row seems to be what you are looking for in Locust Point.

Also realtor.com and Redfin.com .

Default Locust point

Hmmm.... Locust point is the safest neighborhood in the city. I read that either in the Sun a few years ago. I have a ton of friends that live there and love it.

How do you define pricey? Locust point, which I think is one of the best neighborhoods in the city- is a rowhouse community. Rents run from $1800 and up. The apartments in that area are over next to Harris Teeter start at $1700 for a one bedroom. McHenry Row New Apartments, Retail and Offices in Locust Point, Baltimore

I would check craigslist. Locust point, federal hill, fells point and canton all have water taxi access. In Sobo/Fed Hill 1901 Charles and 101 Wells have one bedrooms or studios 1901 S. Charles Street Apartment Rentals | Luxury Apartment Homes in Federal Hill Area and South Baltimore at 1901 South Charles Street studios start at $1450.

I think my problem is that I am not familiar with the area and a lot of listings between most sources I would consider (Craigslist included) don't differentiate neighborhoods so a random street or even a random address on google maps doesn't really help me discern where it REALLY is in relation to "The Wire"'s version of baltimore and the baltimore a lot of people want to be a part of :-/

1. Buy an ADC street map book of Baltimore in any drug store. They cost $17-20 and are indispensable.

2. Locust Point is so far out on the peninsula, it is isolated from the rest of the city. I don't think you have to worry.

3. I an not sure where The Wire as filmed, but if you want to see bad areas, drive west on Route 40, or go west on North Avenue past Coppin State at night. They are a long way from Locust Point.

There is a whole South Peninsula of Baltimore that features Federal Hill and Locust Point. Anywhere on there is really safe for urban living. There is some low income rentals near Sharp and Hamburg streets.. which is barely on the peninsula , but the rest of the peninsula is very nice and keeps getting nicer.

Just type in addresses on Google maps when you see them, if it's on the peninsula you should be fine. I person trying to rent their place will call the entire area Federal Hill or Locust Point.. watch out for anything that comes up as near Federal Hill or Locust Point because that could be Pigtown or other areas. Pigtown isn't so bad either, but not quite the other two.

Take the street address and pop it into Google maps and you can see exactly where it is, even do a street view, piece of cake. Locust Point and most of South Baltimore (Riverside, Federal Hill) are very nice to live in. Parking is probably your biggest issue.

Realtors can help as well. Their fee is paid by the owner so it doesn't cost you anything.
