Bawlmer Merlin. hon. The posts here lead me to infer that most are not native to the city, but relocated due to a job, etc. Those of us who did/do pronounce it "Bawlmer" are probably dead or out of the area.

I've actually never heard anyone pronounce it that way in my 35 years of living here.

I've lived in Bethesda and DC for 18 years and can't recall hearing anyone say "Bawlmer" unintentionally. In fact, that last time I recall hearing it was in an episode of The Wire.

A friend of mine from Essex told me it's mostly the hicks who say it these days.

There are actually several pronunciations of Baltimore, another one being "bawdy-more".

Actually I am guilty of slurring the pronunciation as much as the next person.

Naw, I pronounce it the "t". My locals contort their faces and proceed to ask me where I'm from, I say "here and you?" My mother raised us to speak good English and not to slur or mispronounce words. No apologies! To this day, I still cringe from the pronunciation of the word "Bawlmer."

I have respect for local dialect and slang, I just rarely use it.

I still hear Balmer and Bawdamoor and Baltimore, love all of it. Live it, love it, Own it. There are far worse and far more dull places to live. I like the natives ands I like the new; its a vibrant town.
