Crunchy bugs are good, squishy bugs are bad. USN Survival School.

Most of the Baltimore area will be spared from the cicadas this year. The cicadas that are popping up are of a different variety and inhabit a different area than those that occurred in 2004. Our next infestation will be in 2021.

Yes. This is Brood II, they will emerge in Southern Maryland, and a large part of VA. Most of the state will see few, if any. The big outbreaks for most of Maryland come from Brood X, which did indeed emerge in 2004 as the previous poster stated.

BTW, I love them. It is cool to see the wonder of nature. Billions of 17 year old insects with 2 weeks to be crazy, make noise, and mate. Sounds just like human teenagers, wild times.

They haven't been bad in the city for some reason. At my parents' house it's crazy.
Because there aren't enough trees in this city. I was born in the suburbs and had serious allergies to tree pollen. I've been here for 3 springs now, and they have been the best 3 springs in my life.
