I have family from MD. Westfield Annapolis seems in trouble. Lord & Taylor is closing this year there. And I will not be doubtful that both J.C Penney and Sears close there too. Or at least one of them. That is a MAJOR loss. Just wanted to hear some insight. Lord & Taylor is a step up from Macy's so a closing is not a good sign. Sears is expected to go bankrupt this year and close all stores. So that would be another major department gone from the center. Thoughts?

Thoughts:

Malls are dying. I'm glad. A massive, static, inflexible waste of space in areas that SHOULD be booming otherwise.

I do feel bad for employees and the challenges they face trying to find employment. But large, enclosed shopping malls are not a positive force in our society and I don't think we will miss them when they are all gone for good.

JCPenny's was expanded and renovated a few years back. Montgomery Ward, which used to be where Sears is now, was one of the most profitable stores they had at the very end. I would bet that both Sears and JCPenny will remain to the very end in Annapolis. From what I see there are not as many people in Lord and Taylor (compared to other anchor stores) that weren't just passing through - when they expanded the mall they made it so you had to walk through Lord and Taylor to get from one side to the other. I would bet they will break the area up into smaller stores which will make that side of the mall make more sense. If not it will be a long walk to/from the stores on either side of Lord and Taylor with it completely closed. I think it will take a lot more than Lord and Taylor closing to hurt the Annapolis Mall.
