I know a guy that used to weigh over 500 lbs and collects disability because his knees are bad because of the weight. He essentially ate his way to a free check. However, he lost about 300 lbs and walks every where now. You'd think he'd get a job like the rest of us, but nope he still collects the disability check and lives with his mom. How awesome is that?

I know a guy who collected a check because he was a heroin addict. When they cut out the checks for alcoholics and addicts several years ago he got on a methadone program, went to a doctor to get prescriptions for benzodiazipines, and now collects a check due to his legal addiction and "poorly managed depression." Because of his "disability", his medications and treatment are all paid for by Medicare and Medicaid.

oh man, these people's lives all sound so awesome. Im gonna quit my high paying job, stop paying my mortgage, move in with my mom, gain 300lbs, and get started on a drug habit! It all seems so glamorous, then I can just sit back and collect the big bucks! /sarcasm

Are you people really jealous of those on welfare/food stamps/disability? It sounds like some of you really think they have it made. No thanks. I think I'll keep working.

they are not jealous. they need to minimize somebody to prop themselves above them. with this op, its dehumanizing people on government assistance.

My issue with Section 8 is there are only so many tax dollars to support the program. Subsidized housing should be for those who are the frail elderly on a fixed income and the truely permanently disabled. Not for women and children who are low income. The current system rewards women for having children without the means to support them. Meanwhile the disabled cannot even get on a waiting list for
Section 8 because the waiting lists are too long (depending on what State you reside). I sympathize with children who, by no fault of their own are born into poverty. That said, the government and taxpayers cannot afford to continue to encourage the mentality of entitled dependency on government.. It is not sustainable and only perpetuates the problem. Subsidized housing should be reserved only for those individuals who are truely incapable of working and supporting themselves. Not a bandaid for people who do not acquire the education and skills required for self sufficiency.

I was in line at Camerons Seafood (great fish by the way) A woman pulled out an orange EBT card and ordered a pound or so of prawns...she asked the clerk to keep adding prawns until the card stopped taking it... I paid cash for my whiting and fries... I dont want to switch places with said women.. but it just made me wonder if that was an appropriate use of that benefit? If not, how many other people on that program are doing similiar things.....

Always found it odd: someone with personal knowledge of abuse in a system points it out, and is immediately told he enjoys "dehumanizing" those who commit fraud. A fraud that is paid for by all of us poor working folks. Imagine how many truly needy, deserving people could be helped if we (We being us, We the people, We the Government of the United States) had the money we spent on cheats and frauds. The abuse in the handout system is staggering-listen to conversations on street corners and buses sometime and you'll get an inkling of how large it really is.

I always find it odd when people take anecdotes as evidence of widespread fraud and abuse.

But most people don't know scientific method or statistics, and you probably do.
