Stop using The Wire as a measurement stick for what Baltimore is and is not! Television is fantasy!!! The Wire was light-weight compared to the real insanity that drives this town. The powers that be don't want you to see how Baltimore became this vortex on insanity by the Bay! You don't want me to "pull the garments from this proverbial prostitute" by the Bay called Baltimore City. All you see from The Wire is black pathology and destruction. What you will not see is the racist, backwards institutional power structures that has helped create the current atmosphere within Baltimore City.

As for charming qualities, Every town has some of those, you just have to look. Ever watch the Wire? Now that's good television!

In short, if you don't like Baltimore, stop complaining and leave! As for the locals, that you want to kick out, most of them will never have the opportunity to leave. They are indeed stuck here, your not.

It's a LIE! Ok, you can believe whatever you want! I know different, since I've lived and spent time in some of these outlying Maryland counties. There is a tremendous drug problem in white suburban and rural areas, it's just not reported and broadcasted in the media. I attended educational institutions (usually being one of a handful of black children) in these counties, and I've seen it all!

It's everywhere in MD but worst in the city that kills.

Wow, a lot of negativity on this one! For me, the charm of Baltimore has always been the people. I still remember when I lived in Fells Point years ago and was a regular at the Sip & Bite; one waitress named Louise. She would always go out of her way to ensure all her customers were attended to, sitting down at my booth, or other folks booths when it wasn't too busy to hear what was going on in your life that day. Some people might be offended by that. To me, she was the best of Baltimore. Or walking into the Cat's Eye Pub pretty much any Sunday afternoon for the past 30 years and always meeting friendly new folks who invite you into their circle, or the pharmacists at Medical Arts Pharmacy that I remember giving prescriptions to folks who had no money and taking it out of their own pocket. Or Mrs. Derazio, a widowed italian women who used to make the best homemade lemon cookies and put them on a tray in front of her house for passersby. Baltimore has always had it's share of great everyday people who can make you smile. Sister Catherine who used to run the Franciscian Center's homeless outreach, you couldn't help but love her even if you didn't believe; or Lady Rebecca, one of the warmest and soulful singers I had ever heard, who would invite anyone into her home for a little refuge. Baltimore has always had great characters, people that are uniquely Baltimore. Yeah, there's plenty not to like about the city but the charm comes from the people that make you smile.
