I barely remember streetcars and trolleys in use, and never got to ride one.
Still got trackless trolleys (aka trolleybuses) here in seattle and also in Boston.

So, 9 threads out of 30 (not counting the 2 stickys up top), ~30%.

Let's see here - 2 Bmore not having hockey, one comparing to NYC, one citing anti-DC bias (negatively compared to 2 cities), one stoking racial bias, one stoking immigration bias, one slagging the city's future, one slagging this board as boring and lastly one relevant tidbit you swiped from the Brew about Fells Pt withdrawing support for the Harbor Point proposed development. The bulk of these threads have a negative qualifier in the title. Your threads, posts and attitude are negative, exhibit troll behavior. Its gotten old.

Here in Toronto, we didn't get rid of streetcars, we built new ones, and expanded the service by 200 percent. The Toronto Transit Commission ( short form TTC ) is one of the only transit systems in North America that has maintained and added to it's streetcar inventory.

We had the PCC cars, up until the 1970's, when we put out a tender for a new design. It was built by Hawker Siddley, in Thunder Bay Ontario. In the 1990's, we designed another model, that has air conditioning and can be run as a "double car " that carries over 300 passengers, in total.

The newest design is just being introduced, and it is a flexible design with a double jointed chassis, that can turn around sharp corners. It has a central aisle that runs the whole length of the car, from front to back. It also has three sets of doors, and handicapped seating for 6 people in wheel chairs. The front entrance has a lowering set of steps that also becomes a wheelchair lift.

TTC also operates buses, that are electric hybrid powered, and the subway lines, which are also electric. Electrical energy in Ontario is created by two methods, hydro generation, using water powered turbines ( think of Niagara Falls ) and nuclear power generation stations. Only about 10 percent of our electricity comes from coal now. By 2018 it will be zero coal powered.

Here are some photos of TTC streetcar designs. We move a million people a day by TTC, here in Toronto.

Streetcars are clean, non polluting, last for ever, and are quiet. What 's not to like ?

Actually, I wonder how much track was actually removed and how much was simply paved over. There are still streetcar tracks in evidence all over the city.
