Weekend MARC train service between Washington and Baltimore, which has never been offered before and has long been desired by riders, is set to begin on Dec. 7, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) announced Wednesday.
The service is one of several newly funded projects throughout the state resulting from a major transportation funding package, passed by the Maryland General Assembly this spring, that will gradually increase gas taxes and raise a projected $4.4 billion for new projects over the next six years.

Notice anything odd about that photo? Those two passengers are STANDING on a long distance commuter train. At some point MTA needs to get a handle on how many cars are needed and on what trains to deal with capacity issues. Weekend trains are great.. but if they cause more weekday train and train cars to get taken out of service for maintenance during the week day....then its a mute point. I did see where they are ordering more locomotives and new cars.. so if that are adding them to the fleet and not retiring any.. then it may be a good thing. Has anyone ever ridden a commuter train in NYC, Chicago, or Philly and are common?

My biggest gripe.. as an MARC Montly ticket holder.. Is that they dont allow MARC Passengers to ride Amtrak Regionals between Washington and Baltimore.. You can ride them between Washington and Aberdeen on a MARC Monthly but not Baltimore.. You could buy a monthly to Aberdeen and simply get off in Baltimore.. but that would cost you $$$. Amtrak Monthlys are also $$$.. The fair (lol Fare) option would be to do what the VRE does and allow MARC Monthly Ticket holders to pay a small "step up" fare to ride an Amtrak Regional.. "off peak" as opposed to simply forcing all of the on the MARC trains. Amtrak will get a little $ plus it would ease MARC capacity issues. You can ride Amtrak off of a MARC Monthly for free between Washington and Baltimore on select trains on the weekend.. I PRAY that dont take that away... Its nice to be able to get to DC with only two stops in between.

Please -- that's the first thing gone come December (I'll miss it too, but I already internalized that sinking feeling months ago when I heard that they were planning weekend service). You want that luxury weekend NE Regional service, pay-up friend. Every time I get a bit of extra salary and contemplate buying a NE Regional monthly, I find that the price was jacked-up even more (proportionally). Now a monthly between Baltimore and Washington is $432/month! I don't own a car, but it can't be too much more costly than NER monthly! Plus, I'd be giving-up all my 'free/included' MTA/WMATA/RideOn trips. Uggh!

Despite my impending pain, I think it's great that weekend service will start. It'll give people a way out of DC and out of Baltimore to try and see different things.
