I'm relocating to Baltimore, and I'm curious as to what residents here think about gun laws and concealed carry laws in MD?

There are no concealed carry laws in Maryland. I suggest you research the laws and abide by them or face the possibility of jail time. The only ones who are allowed to carry guns in Maryland are law enforcement officers and criminals.

That's not technically true.

To receive a CCW in MD you must prove that you have active and identifiable threats being made against you. That standard is floating. You may also receive a CCW if you carry large amounts of cash for deposit.

There is no open carry in MD. That extends to long guns, which must be cased at all times outside your house (such as carrying them from your house to your vehicle) and during transit. While carrying firearms in a vehicle they must be unloaded and the ammunition stored in a locked area separate from the firearm.

Even receiving a permit to purchase a handgun is an exercise in futility. In addition to the waiting period and background check you must now be fingerprinted and undergo a training class. Even doing that is no guarantee the MD State Police will not deny (that's the verbiage. Not "Approved" but "Not Denied") your application. There are exemptions for military personnel, both active duty and retired.

Also, very stringent rules regarding "assault-type weapons", especially for new purchases. These can include MOST (but not all, such as a Colt Heavy-barrel AR) AR-15 types, AKs, modified semi-auto shotguns (Saigas).

Magazines for rifles limited to 10shot, unless you already have them in your possession (ie you can't purchase them via mail-order).

In short, Murlin is gun-free. That's how come the crime is so low.

even if you can get a CC permit, there are restrictions. I knwo a bar owner with a CC permit - he's only allowed to carry when he's making a cash deposit and on his way back from the bank. If he's caught strapped adn not doing those things, he's in trouble. MD's gun laws are awful.

Having worked in the bar/restaurant business for many, many years, I can tell you that gun laws here are beyond restrictive, and highly arbitrary. In a largely cash business where deposits have to be made on a daily/nightly basis, one may wait years just to have a response to when a request for a carry permit will be denied. Not permitted, denied. Business owners are routinely robbed when depositing the night's receipts.
Baltimore City's suggested alternative is to call a Police Officer to request an escort to the all-night bank depository every night at 3:00 AM and hope they show up. The cops will show up so rarely that small business owners seek other methods to protect themselves.
I am not a gun nut, and I don't own one. But I grew up in the deep South where gun laws are much laxer, penalties for gun crimes are much harsher, and violent weapons crimes are far fewer. A lesson to be learned.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I have a CCW in Indiana but almost never use it, and now that I have a couple of kids these things are always locked up and separated from ammo. Maybe it's time I sell the lot...

I'm no gun nut and don't like the NRA, but there's a difference between sensible gun control laws and no laws (like Georgia, where you're practically compelled to carry by law). After doing some research I do think MD is overreaching, especially on ownership, but that's just my opinion. Why we can't have something in the middle is beyond me, but that's for a different forum.
