What is it going to take to get communities interested in doing better for themselves? Demanding the city government to do it's job and not just accept all the ..ish coming from them. What will motivate folks to help themselves and not wait for someone or something else to 'help' them?

If humans are to be compared to
computers then we must reason that
these men's hard drives are grossly
affected by damaging viruses and malware.

A through cleaning and re-install
of programs that promote positive
actions is the solution.

The lead photo of this video is telling.. These individuls hanging around in front of a vacant rowhouse on marble steps... which used to be the a symbol of homeownership, stability and pride in Baltimore City....now simply an abandon stoop in front of a vacant home that could be just about anywhere in west or east baltimore... Sad... The irony in this photo is the vacant home has a new sections of sidewalk in front of it..while likely some other homeowner nearby has a crumbling one in front of their home that they have lived in for 30years and paid taxes on for just as long.... hmm great job DPW

This was a very interesting video. Thank you for sharing Barante!

It poses some really telling issues, mainly about the lack of jobs in the area and the mismatch of jobs vs. skills for people in this particular community and how the lack of manufacturing opportunities plays such a big role.

Goes to show not everyone is built for college and white-collar jobs but there is a huge gap in the labor and skill pool vs. jobs for people like this.

Then it makes me wonder if some sort of jobs came there with openings, how many people from the community would be skilled enough to get jobs? Of the ones who are still unemployable, what could be done to get them up to speed? It sounds like these men, want to do right and lead stable lives but where do the opportunities come?

Very sad, but insightful. I wouldn't mind learning more about this.

Don't know how sad this video really is/was....many of the men were wearing expensive designer clothing. No jobs but brand new clothes?

There are many, many underground economies functioning in Baltimore City. Drugs, "boosting", "scrapping", plasma selling, paid participation in drug treatment and research, hacking, various welfare and social service frauds, bootleg DVDs and CDs, dubious legal "suitcases", prostitution, shooting galleries, "raffles", house parties, car chopping, storefront churches, unlicensed bars, even the sweet little ol' lady who sells chicken dinners out of her home, are only a few of the dozens of hustles going on daily. Oh, the tales I could tell!
Thing is, most of these activities are hard, unpleasant work, and often don't pay well. Could these energies be directed towards some more legitimate form of enterprise? Definitely, but once you're into hustling there is some pressure to stay there...

David Simon is a tool and an apologist for this crap. Over on the east side near Bayview hundreds of Hispanics, many with dubious legal status, can't speak English yet somehow get up to work jobs all over the city. When you pass the road crews and construction sites you'll see them.

Black men of Baltimore are content to be victims and whine.

Without legal status, some of those workers you see could be paid next-to-nothing in wages. If a job's salary is less than what you think you're worth, then you're not content/lazy because you refuse to take that job.
