We are relocating for work from NY and have found a nice place in Linthicum Heights. We are seeking any information that might help us, pros and cons. No kids yet but, soon.

Hopefully someone will chime in.

I'm not keen on that area, except as a stop on my way to the airport via the lightrail. Try doing a search for Lithicum on this forum in the meantime.

Linthicum is a working / lower middle class suburb of Baltimore. There's nothing remarkable about the area. I don't think it's any safer or more dangerous than any comparable areas in the Baltimore suburb.

The suburbs immediately south of Baltimore are a hodgepodge of older and newer working class/lower middle class communities. They have never been known for anything other than affordable places to live. The schools aren't the best, the retail isn't the best, the amenities aren't notable, the main commercial strips tend to be run down or unremarkable. But at the same time there's nothing "wrong" with the area. People live there primarily because they can't afford places further south like Severna Park or the suburbs to the west in Howard County.

If you want an area with a more established character and still want to be close to that side of the city, you would do well to look into Catonsville. Of all the suburbs of Baltimore, Catonsville comes closest to a proper small town feel, with a diverse range of residents and a mix of neighborhoods from the historic and stately to modest post war split levels to newer construction.

^^What the above poster said. However, there is some charm in and around Linthicum it just takes a bit more searching to find.

*By the way, I hate how the post office and others refer to the area as Linthicum Heights. Where did that nonsense come from?

That's what i figured. As we were driving around, we noticed the place where our rental is, has some large old colonials in need of repair with great property. There are also some very nice farm like estates. As long as it's safe we'll be fine. I think the "heights" comes from the idea that if you add this title to a town it will sound more regal. It happens allover the US. We are north of the airport and will not have air traffic noise, we are told we will benefit from the winter road upkeep the airport has due to the road access needs.

There is the Andover Recreation Facility which has a "for members only" policy. They have swimming, tennis courts, and other amenities.

Stats..//www.city-data.com/zips/21090.html

Linthicum is divided into "North Linthicum" and "Shipley Linthicum " by the beltway. North side is bungalows..modest , working folks, mostly safe. The Shipley side you are looking at is more affluent with a mix of old victorians, ranchers, and newer /larger homes. Bit more professional class with Northrop engineers, etc..also quite safe. Both areas convenient to downtowm/ annapolis, DC etc. Median income ..
Estimated median household income in 2011:
This zip code: $78,320
Maryland: $70,004

This includes both North and Shipley..hardly "Working/Lower Middle class"

Yes, we are in the Shipley area closer to Andover Park. Do you know anything about Andover Recreation? Thanks.
