Young White College Grads Are Pushing Blacks Out Of Cities

Young Whites are changing the demographics of many Black cities

AFRICANGLOBE – How do we make sense of the fact that America’s most progressive cities, the ones that cherish diversity,
are losing African Americans? And that the most conservative places are doing the opposite?
Between 2000 and 2010, cities like Austin, Chicago, Washington D.C., San Francisco—places that vote majority Democrat, consider themselves socially and culturally progressive, and boast racial diversity—all lost unprecedented numbers of African Americans. San Francisco, for instance, saw a staggering 20.4 percent loss in its African American population between 2000 and 2010. Chicago and Washington D.C. also experienced double-digit losses.
During that same decade, the only three major cities (populations over 500,000) that voted Republican in the 2012 presidential election— Phoenix, Fort Worth, and Oklahoma City—all saw significant increases in African American numbers; their African-American populations grew by 36.1 percent, 28 percent and 11.4 percent respectively.

Liberals are silly.
100% black neighborhoods = diverse.
90% white + 10% mix of everything else = evil whitey shutting everyone else out.
HUH?

It's not so much that whites are pushing blacks out of the cities, if anything many black people are leaving Baltimore and other cities for the suburbs voluntarily primarily for the same reasons that everyone else has in the past (ie lower cost of living, better schools, low crime rates, etc). At the same time retirees, DINK's, or singles are moving into Baltimore and other inner cities because it offers access to walkable neighborhoods and countless entertainment options such as bars, restaurants, etc.

Well, 'progressive' cities and African-Americans aren't exactly the same thing. Progressive cities make room for blacks, but they also make room for everything else. People with money want to be in progressive areas, because that is where the new ideas flow and money can be moved with them, etc. Cities like Baltimore, Memphis, etc. have a large black population, but that doesn't make them progressive.

Additionally, 'diversity' means a lot of different things. But, to most progressives it means a diverse selection of restaurants, international people, and an inclusive mindset to 'other'. It doesn't mean living in a largely homogeneous black population.

I don't see it happening in Baltimore unless a lot of city's mostly Black neighborhoods will be gentrified.

Nothing wrong with that. I have made a few posts on the topic of gentrification. It isn't inherently a bad thing and at worst will add jobs to the area; abandoned homes will get fixed up, the streets will get cleaner as caring citizens pick up trash and then subsequently avoid littering, and a whole host of other positives generally associated with vibrant communities.

If the hoodrats who sell drugs, intimidate ordinary citizens, leave trash everywhere, and allow houses to fall into ruin and decay just so happen to be priced out of the area....well good riddance to 'em.

I don't find anything wrong with gentrification. I'm fedup with seeing abandoned houses.

HUH?
You are confusing the 'conversative' definition of diversity, and the 'liberal' definition of diversity.

In conservative talk, 'diversity' is a code word for 'there are blacks living there'. In liberal talk, 'diversity' means 'we can enjoy a diversity of restaurants there'.
