I am a mentor for a child who is having issues with his school. He's only in the 7 th grade but I would like to try to get him to a good high school when the time comes. He's a good student but he comes from a poor family in the hood and the city schools well you know.. Does anybody have any information who to contact for financial help or a place that helps striving students who wants to be their education at a better school?

Hey now! I've seen many kids grow up in the "hood" and come out as successful, happy people. Instead of trying to transfer him to another high school, you should help him strive at his local high school. He COULD however apply to go to Poly or Baltimore City College for high school, but he may not like it there, either. You never know. Maybe he could apply to nearby schools in other counties like Glen Burnie, North County, Meade, or Northeast High Schools in Anne Arundel as an out-of-area transfer. You'd need like a legit reason for him to get the transfer approved though. But like I said, he may not like it or fit in at those schools though. Just be there for him no matter what school he goes to, and make sure he works to the best of his ability. All children are stars and can succeed in any school if they try. I've seen it for the past 16 years.

Hey thanks for the information. The issue is not his drive for success but it's two fold: (1) His environment with other peers who he has gotten in trouble with before and (2) The lack of resources he currently receives. It would be better for him to be with peers who won't bring him down. Also this is his mother's request, I can simply only help.

The advice that poster #2 gave: "just be there for him no matter what" is the best advice. The more time he spends with you, the more influence you will have, and the less influence the bums who got him in trouble will have.

Take a look at the website www.mhskids.org The Milton Hershey Trust (the one that owns the candy company) runs a free boarding school for kids from challenged backgrounds, and it draws from Philly and Baltimore. Some years ago, I knew a Baltimore lady who was fortunate to send her two sons there. Maybe you can get him in there.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools opens their out of area transfer requests from March to May of each year. The closest high schools to Baltimore in AAC that are open for out of area transfer are Glen Burnie, North County, and Northeast High Schools (as a back up if he doesn't get into Poly or BCC). I think he should apply to Poly or BCC in 8th grade, too.

How awesome that you're looking out for this child! Your first call should be to the Board of Education for the child's current school district or maybe even the guidance counselor in the school. Hopefully they can inform you about any special programs, magnet schools or even private schools will sometimes offer scholarships for low income kids.
