Hello.

I ride on the Baltimore light rail today without a ticket and was caught. The police officer gave me a blue ticket with a charge of $50. I don't mind paying the fee at all since I made a mistake. But I sincerely don't want any criminal record. The police officer said that if I paid the fine then this will go on my criminal record so he suggested me to go to trail.
I'm an internation student who just graduated yeaterday and I don't want this record to affect further employment or us visa opportunity.

If any of you have had this before would you please let me know what would be the best thing to do in this case? Thank you very much.

I think there needs to be a law change. Folks shouldn't get a criminal record for not paying a $1.60 on a train.

I'm not an attorney, but this is most likely not a significant misdemeanor. Usually employers don't look at this type of misdemeanors, and for H-1 to PR status, I don't think USCIS ask for minor misdemeanors either.

I suggest you talk to a real attorney though. Pay the $100 or whatever consultation fee they charge, but get expert advice.

This whole thing is funny because when I rode the light rail I would see people who don't pay their fare jump off the train like rats on a sinking ship. They are intentionally and wilfully breaking the law. They try to jump right around cold spring lane. Now when someone like us makes some mistake or doesn't have a ticket, then we pay the fine.

More Bull**** Baltimore.
