I liked Capt. C., but could have done without Moandy(sp?) and Bruce the Bird.

Spent my entire childhood watching him on WBFF 45 when it was an independent UHF channel.

When he left and was replaced by those two idiots Kenny and Steve I never watched afternoon TV again on channel 45.

A lot of cities in the U.S., starting in the 1950's
had at least one afternoon kids show.

The host would read letters, play games for prizes, show
cartoons and hawk products for sponsors.

Out of this tradition came Soupy Sales, Sandy Becker,
Bob McAllister of Wonderama (who started his career
with an afternoon kids show in Baltimore) Stu Kerr (Professor
Kool) and George A. Lewis ASA Captain Chesapeake.

Stu Kerr started his broadcast career
in the early 1950's with a tv show called
The Janitor on WMAR-TV.

The tv show was built around a janitor who comes
to clean the tv station after everyone has left.
He is aware of the camera and makes a fool of himself.
for it. When WMAR-TV had their 50th anniversary special
they showed brief clips of kinescopes of The Janitor. Not
sure how much of the show survives since it was broadcast
live.

I remember that show being titled "The Early Riser". Am I confusing it with another show?

Was the janitor a coloured fella (old school 1950's lingo)? This is some good history.

No.

I thought it was the first thing WMAR broadcast in the morning, with the Early Riser being the first one at the station to clean up before the rest of the staff shows up.

Although a DC boy and therefore a Captain 20 fan, I remember Captain Chesapeake. Our main TV was in the basement and did not get Channel 45. But the one upstairs did and we usually watched that when we were sick and bedridden.
