Is there anyone on this board that does that? What is the commute time like? Any other advice or opinions?

I did for years in the past. I also commuted to Lancaster from Baltimore. The drive from west Baltimore to York took about 45 minutes. Back then I 83 and 695 speed limits were 70 miles per hour. The closer you live to 83 the less time it will take to commute to York. It also depends on the area you work in York. York has a number of exits off of 83. Also number of citizens working and living in York has increased considerably. McDonogh is a great school but are there others like it in York ?

I should emphasize once more that it's not a question of deciding whether McDonogh is the best fit for his kids, as it will be McDonogh who will make that decision, not him. Admissions is not guaranteed. Cast your net widely.

I agree. I was just saying that I don't know if the OP has considered the other private schools and has decided they wouldn't work for his family (in which case, it's either McDonogh or public school/homeschool) or if he would be open to considering other private schools. If it's "McDonogh or Bust" then there's no point in worrying about the other private schools.

Based on our research on niche.com Baltimore's private schools are little bit better than Harrisburg or Lancaster?

Thanks for your suggestions, and we called the McDonough yesterday about school bus, sounds like they offer bus service but cannot guarantee door-to-door or around-the-block service. They said stops are really depends on students homes, group stops may be organized to save time. Maybe Spark is a good location?

I believe that McDonough has their own bus service, but if not, one of you (most likely you) will be taking them there. So I assume you would want to pick a location that would minimize the overall net commute-time for your entire family.

I'm not sure if Sparks would work for that. Yes, it would almost certainly be shorter for your wife than would Lutherville or Greenspring Valley; but it would add to yours considerably, because I-83 and I-695 from Sparks to McDonough can be a pain. Because your wife would be the only one with a reverse commute, the best way to minimize your total family commute (in terms of time) is to minimize yours and maximize hers (in terms of distance).

Of course, if you and the kids don't mind a longer commute, then Sparks would probably work well for you.

As other posters have said, there are other private schools besides McDonough. Of course, if you've already decided that McDonough would be the best fit for you, then it's a moot point. But otherwise, you may wish to consider some of the schools in North Baltimore (meaning, the schools located in proximity to Roland Avenue & Northern Parkway).
