Tuesday, Feb. 12 2008 Priceline Releases Its Annual List Of Top 50 Destinations For Upcoming Presidents Weekend, February 16-18

This is comical stuff! Yeah I'd much rather be in Baltimore in February than say San Diego...

Baltimore: #3 and Boston/Philadelphia/Washington: #44-46. Hmm, does not compute, and I LIKE Baltimore (well, at least the nicer parts).

I read the same article in the Examiner today. It's interesting that it's based on actual bookings rather than an opinion poll.

Here's my take based on talking to a few folks actually touring DC. Hotels are booked in Baltimore by people wanting to see DC because 1. school trips to DC this time of year have all the hotels in DC booked up, and 2. the hotels that are available in Baltimore are much cheaper than DC. It's worth the 45 min. drive to see DC in order to save money on a hotel. Before making a conclusion about people coming to visit Baltimore they should have interviewed some of those people. The article presents information that is true, I'm sure, but, relatively meaningless.

Okay, so rather than just do a survey on bookings, they are expected to interview God knows how many people in all 50 locations to see their motivations for said-visits? Stooping to new lows on this one. Whatever. #50-Miami-Airport area. Oops. Forgot to ask the 10,000 people why they are in the airport. My bad. Also, school groups visiting DC this time of year???? Every state in this country is gearing up for statewide tests that are to occur in March and April. Very few are taking extended trips until those tests are completed. And prices for hotels being cheaper in Baltimore?? Probably on the whole yes, but I doubt for the Inner Harbor area.

I was in the Inner Harbor area Friday afternoon, and it appeared to be swarming with tourists. Maybe I should have stopped a few and interrogated them .

Also, according to priceline.com, hotels in downtown B-more are actually on average currently more expensive than those in DC ($199 for a 4-star vs. $129).

I don't think future bookings is a good measure to use by itself because the numbers can easily be inflated by major conferences or special events going on in some of these areas.
