I'm looking to make a move from the DC suburbs (NoVA) to downtown Baltimore. At the top of my list is the Equitable Building (10 N Calvert) in downtown.

I was just curious about this area, any thoughts?
  • Safety
  • Things to do
  • Walkability
  • etc.

Thanks!

Safety -- it's good enough during the day. Plenty of pedestrian traffic out and about, what with the office buildings and the courthouse being located on the diagonally opposite corner of Calvert & Fayette. Personally, I'm not a fan of the Baltimore CBD after hours; it's too sketchy for my liking. I guess it depends on your tolerance for urban living.

Things to do -- pretty much everything that downtown Baltimore has to offer is within walking distance. There's also the Charm City Circulator (free shuttle bus service) for trips farther afield, such as to Fort McHenry or the Baltimore Museum of Art or Penn Station.

Walkability -- no problems there. Just about everything within downtown is easily walkable from there.

Etc -- On the ground floor of the Equitable are two establishments, a 7-Eleven with friendly employees and Gina's Cafe with tasty food (and also generally friendly employees). Directly across Calvert Street is an M & T Bank branch. There are pharmacies within a block or two as well. Mercy Hospital is just a few blocks north, in case you need medical care.

I would urge caution after dark. You won't be in a particularly dangerous area but we are talking about Baltimore. By the way, the later after dark you are out, the more dangerous it gets. Just be wise.

There is stuff to do and a grocery store four blocks away. The circulator is a great way to get to the northern part of Mount Vernon and to Federal Hill. I'm not sure why there aren't more downtown bars and restaurants that are open at night, but there are enough. I have to think that with the downtown populations growing so fast, within five years there we be more people on the street in the CBD in the evening and more for them to do.

Thanks for the responses. It does seem like there could be some concern at night.

We have a dog, so it's nice the Equitable has a dog park on the roof so my gf won't have to go on the street alone at night.

Speaking of which, any good places to walk dogs in Baltimore? Would a short drive to Patterson Park be worth it? Or any good walking areas recommendations?

There is a small dog park in the block between Fayette and Baltimore streets, in the narrow sliver of land between Liberty Street and Park Avenue. This would be about 4 blocks from the Equitable Building.
