The Life of Kings: The Baltimore Sun and the Golden Age of the American Newspaper

Published 15-7-2016 by Rowman & Littlefield Publisher

The Life of Kings: The Baltimore Sun and the Golden Age of the American Newspaper In an age when local daily papers with formerly robust reporting are cutting sections and even closing their doors, the contributors to The Life of Kings celebrate the heyday of one such paper, the Baltimore Sun, when it set the agenda for Baltimore, was a force in Washington, and extended its reach around the globe. Contributors like David Simon, creator of HBO s The Wire, and renowned political cartoonist Kevin Kallaugher (better known as KAL), tell what it was like to work in what may have been the last golden age of American newspapers -- when journalism still seemed like the life of kings that H.L. Mencken so cheerfully remembered. The writers in this volume recall the standards that made the Sun and other fine independent newspapers a bulwark of

You're expecting comment about a book that apparently will be published a month from now (15 Jul 2016)?

Maybe I'll have something to say about it after I've actually had a chance to read it.

LOL! Fair enough...

But, interestingly enough, I've seen people comment ALL DAY AND NIGHT on films not even currently in production as of yet. Why should books be any different (they actually are different, and I'm for certain you're going to explain to me why that is?)?

I'll probably read it. (When it actually becomes available next month.)

I still subscribe to the Sun and the Maryland Gazette (America's oldest newspaper).

And the New York Times.

Unfortunately, I will have to partially agree with you, especially in the city of Baltimore. People here don't give a rat's buttocks about their own city's history. Baltimoreans limit their literature reading to Ravens and Orioles stats (as if they actually know what they mean??!!) or some pornographic magazine.

Actually, people still do care about newspapers.
They just don't read it in paper form as much as they used to.
More people read newspapers on the internet. The advantage
is more instant updates. Unfortunately, the quality of journalism
has plummeted. Anyone with a computer can start a blog and
pretend to be a journalist.

Actually, I'm going to check this out.

Contrary to popular belief, Baltimoreans DO read newspapers and do read books.

My family used to get the Sun and the News-American and was really bummed when the NA went under.

The state of newspapers nationwide is problematic with the exception of very few areas. It's not a "Baltimore" problem.

Just added the book to my Amazon wishlist.
