I currently live in upstate NY, about 4-5 hours from the nearest big city. From what I hear, the area was nice about 20 years ago, but the attrition rate is pretty high since the big companies left. It isnt an extremely small town, but there are certainly far less conveniences and choices. I’m originally from a chicago suburb so I'm use to being able to go to the local best buy, having the choice between more than 2 grocery chains.

Anyways, I'm looking into relocating to a job in Edgewood, MD. Right now, in NY, I commute approx 20min to work on a clear interstate, so I figure I might beable to live somewhere close to boston.

I'd prefer to live in a nice suburban area thats not too crowded. Close enough to a big city where I get some of the conveniences but out far enough that the COL is not too high.

I'd appreciate any advice or opinions on the area.
I'm doing as much research as I can, but it can't beat first hand knowledge

Bel Air, Abingdon, or the White Marsh area might suit your needs. These areas could be getting more and more crowded in the future though, with BRAC and all. But they're typical Maryland suburbs not too far from Baltimore.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not too concerned about an area gettint more crowded. When I was back in chicago, my suburb experience alot of growth from people spreading out so it was a positive thing in general. A high number of these people were higher income families looking to get out of the city. I would only be concerned if it significantly increases the crime rate. When you refer to BRAC do you mean closing of bases? how does that affect the Bel Air, Abingdon, or the White Marsh area?, is there a base near there that is closing (or opening)?

Aberdeen Proving Ground is an army base in Harford County (same county as Bel Air and Abingdon) that is expecting a large increase in jobs over the next few years, mainly due to the closure of Fort Monmouth in New Jersey.
