Lag:

1. fall behind in movement, progress, or development; not keep pace with another or others.

What do you think?!

Of course it lags behind. A more productive question might be: How is Baltimore going to catch up to other East Coast cities?

Good question that you can create a post around! Well, 2 other individuals who already voted, say differently.

Baltimore is a great city. It has some of the nicest neighborhoods on the east coast, has a rich culture and history, has a nice downtown, and has stuff to do. Baltimore is only bad because of its ghetto neighborhoods but that doesn't represent all of Bmore.

I think the question "Does Baltimore lag behind other East coast cities?" is a leading question. Starting a line of inquiry with a leading question threatens the objectivity of the inquiry.

I personally can't answer the question because I haven't spent any time in any large East coast cities. Also, I'm not sure it is a valid comparison. Doesn't the Baltimore metro have a significantly smaller population than other East coast metros such as Boston, Philly, DC?

If the objective behind the question is to start dialogue on how Baltimore could be a better place to live, then I don't know that I'd frame this question as "how to catch up with other East Coast cities". Does it need to be a competition? To me, a more productive question would be, "How can we make Baltimore a better place to live? And how do we do it?"

I think you are missing the point. People expect Baltimore to be doing better than it is because of its East Coast location. People not only expect Baltimore to improve (something that is quite likely no matter what,) they expect Baltimore to be as rich, safe, and influential as the other cities. I don't think anybody in Baltimore has any answers as to how that will happen. I laid out a few ideas in the other thread; but I don't expect the Baltimore establishment to buy into what I had to say.

Baltimore constantly competes with Detroit as the most failing big city in the US. Demographics don't bear that out. Lots of other cities have similar or even bigger troubles. None the less, people have high expectations for Baltimore (because of its location) which the city clearly fails to meet. As such, Baltimore probably is preforming the worst compared with expectations and that explains all of the scorn.

*Yes, this has been my thinking for many years now. If your city is snuggled in between 2 economically and politically powerful cities (NYC/DC), even inside their shadow, there should be a air of sophistication and progressiveness in Baltimore City.

Is it the thinking of the Baltimore establishment or its citizens lack of vision. Most visionaries I see in Baltimore are from somewhere else.

True, the city has much culture and history, but it's not revered, respected and supported like many cities.

*Not only its ghetto neighborhoods, but it's run-down hillbilly/redneck enclaves that put a serious black eye in Baltimore City/County and throughout the state (IMHO).
