If my husband works at Johns Hopkins -- and we really liked Richmond, VA and a lot of VA -- where would you suggest we live to keep the commute sane?

Can afford $2,000 rent.

Homeschool our kids so schools aren't huge deal.

Love dog parks, libraries, pools (for Marco Polo: not swim team)

Probably do best in a suburb -- my husband grew up in a rough area and doesn't want to repeat.

He'd love a 20 min. commute if possible.

Thanks for any help!

Alley

Which Johns Hopkins? Johns Hopkins main university campus (Homewood) in North Baltimore? Johns Hopkins business school in downtown Baltimore? Johns Hopkins medical campus on North Broadway/Orleans Street? Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital? Johns Hopkins Applied Physics in Howard County?

If Hopkins hospital or university, think White Marsh is best bet. Commute will be difficult since Hopkins is right in the city meaning you must use surface streets to get there. If Hopkins Bayview, Glen Burnie is best bet. Commute will be at least 1/2 hour though unless you are in the city itself.

Are you looking for more of a city or suburban lifestyle?

OP is looking for a suburban lifestyle.

But until we know which Johns Hopkins the OP's husband works at, we won't be able to answer her question.

Is it even possible to work in the Johns Hopkins Hospital area and reach a really nice suburb in 20 minutes? For Homewood... no problem.

I'd say it's possible if they live near the subway.

Since the OP also posted about a hospital in Greenville, NC, it's safe to assume she meant either Bayview or the main hospital. I think White Marsh, Essex or other eastern suburbs would work for either one. I note that they were not concerned about schools. However, I think they need to expect a 40-45 minute commute for a commute to White Marsh.

Essex would be a shorter commute if they find the right house. Rosedale would work if they don't mind an older bungalow neighborhood, as it is right next to Bayview.

I'm not sure why Glen Burnie was recommended for Bayview, since you would need to go under the I-895 tunnel. I hope the husband is not claustrophobic about tunnels!
