I saw an interesting job posted at the University of Maryland Medical Center. How far away would a safe suburb be from there with quality schools. My price range for a home would be in the $350-400k ballpark.

Catonsville is close by and fits those criteria. How much house do you need?

Catonsville is very nice. I think I would look closer to the western edge closer to Ellicott City for a home in your price range. The areas near the colleges are nice but usually more expensive.

You should be able to find something in Catonsville, Ellicott City, or the Towson/Rodger's Forge area, especially if you're open to townhome/condo living.

Catonsville would be the closest place at about 8.6 miles. Towson is further at about 20 miles.

Columbia and Elkridge (Howard County) should be on your radar also.

There are some Baltimore City Suburbs boarding on Catonsville.
Ten Hills, Hunting Ridge. Awesome communities. Renowed for being hidden,
but they have lots of space, alot of greenery, easy access to an IB public School
and multiple reasonably priced private schools.

Just don't always seem to have alot of homes for sale.

Their are Baltimore neighborhoods boarding on Catonsville, namely Ten Hills, and Hunting Ridge.
Good size homes with good yard space, lots of character, with close proximity to an IB Elementary and Middle School
and multiple reasonably priced private schools.

Lots of green space, very dog friendly, with strong neighborhood associations.

They are known to be "secret neighborhoods" but they talked about Hunting Ridge in Baltimore Magazine so I guess I won't
get in to much trouble talking about it.

Not many houses go on sale, but the one's that do seem to be in your price range.

Outside of Catonsville, I would also look at Elkridge, Serverna Park, Columbia, and Pikesville.

I agree with many of the above. Being most familiar with the western suburbs myself, your price range would put you in Catonsville or Columbia most likely.
