Detroit is a mess in terms of the decay and abandoned buildings, I agree with that. However, Detroit's murder rate is actually lower than Baltimore's at this point.

Many of those neighborhoods in Baltimore are directly adjacent to or comprise the inner harbor. Yes, there have been some issues recently, but those on the thread who say they are scared to even foot in the city as grown adults are being overly hyperbolic.

Crime has occurred in very random locations through out our country. Unfortunately we can't prevent nor foresee it. I think the kids will be fine, their is allot of foot traffic at the harbor.

No we can't, but smart people avoid areas where there is a greater likelihood of adverse occurrences. Whether the decision to cancel field trips is seen as a legitimate action or not the school system responded to legitimate concerns.

I remember a discussion here a couple years ago about a mostly Black high school football team going to Western Maryland for a game and the "worries" some posters had about possible racism.

It doesn't take too many of these to have an impact:

New Jersey family visiting Inner Harbor assaulted by group of juveniles, police say - Baltimore Sun

Baltimore police report several robberies by juveniles who took cellphones, Halloween candy - Baltimore Sun

Moderator cut: link removed, competitor site

Also, is it possible that you've lived there long enough to become somewhat inured to the crimes occurring?

A school district cancelling a field trip to the Science Center is pretty much the definition of hyperbole. The chances of having students getting mugged inside the Maryland Science Center building are virtually the same as me winning the lottery especially considering the amount of people and security inside the facility. Now if the field trip included a visit to the Lexington Market area then that would be more understandable.

Just to clarify things it is only certain neighborhoods that are having these issues. Areas like Harbor East, Federal Hill, Fells Point, Roland Park, Hampden, Paterson Park, and Canton are actually seeing a lot of outside investment and crime is not an issue for the most apart aside from property crimes which every urban area in the US suffers from.

False. I live in federal hill and violent crime is most certainly a big concern. In the past month we've had a murder, a band of juveniles beating people with bats and boards, and numerous armed carjackings and robberies. It's not just property crime anymore.

That's the way it is in any city or jurisdiction. Go look at some of the Prince George's threads, crime is localized primarily in a relative handful of areas but the County as a whole gets the fallout. Same as Baltimore.

These Carroll County children are much more likely to be killed in church than in Baltimore City.
