School district officials in a mostly white Maryland county have decided that Baltimore is too unsafe for field trips.

Carroll County school district officials, citing guidance from the local sheriff, say two class trips to the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore were canceled due to "escalating violence" in the city.

"Due to escalating violence reported in Baltimore City, and consultation with law enforcement and Maryland Center for School Safety, we will not be sending any students on field trips to Baltimore City at this time,” the district said in an email to parents.

White Children Not Safe In Violent Baltimore, School District Says

I agree with their decision, I would never let my kids go to Baltimore on a field trip.

Baltimore is not safe, period, for anyone, Black or White. I'm Black and I would never think of even moving to Baltimore. Too much violence and racial tensions for me.

That's why it's called the city that bleeds.

The school system didn't say Baltimore is unsafe for White kids, Newsweek did.

After reading the article, it was in fact Newsweek saying this. The way I see Baltimore, it isn't safe for anyone, unless you can live near Inner Harbor.

A school field trip, Safe.
Let Children wander around city alone, Not Safe

School Field Trip, Bus pull up to front door of X (Museum), Kids, Teachers, Parent chaperons walk ten feet into building. Tour Museum, At End walk out of building, Walk 10 feet get back on Bus, drive out of town in a convoy of BIG Yellow Buses.

Even the Inner Harbor area is becoming problematic.

It is a very odd decision. I get the city is having problems, but I really doubt that a proctored group of school agers visiting the Harbor would be the targets of anything, random or otherwise.

Are there any cases of students on school trips from out-of-county students being physically or verbally assaulted?

Having lived most of my life in Baltimore, the violent crime has been very bad since the early 80s BUT, until the last few years it was primarily gangs killing gangs and their families. Now the violence has spread to every neighborhood and is directed randomly. Baltimore”could” be a great city, it has so much history and personality. But I would no longer take kids to events in the city. The crime has become too random and pervasive and law enforcement is powerless. When you live there you become desensitized to it, until a loved one becomes a victim. I still return to visit family and friends but, would never live there again.
