Husband is being transferred to downtown Baltimore...we are looking for a ranch style home under$350,000...within an hr commute. Would love to be in VA but thinking commute would be crazy. Kids are grown so schools aren't a concern. Would like a newer home in rural community. Only driven thru MD don't know anything about areas or communities....any help would be appreciated.

Yes it would. But what is it about VA that you're looking for?

That depends on how you define 'rural'... but farming and the horsey set are both available.
How do you feel about wells and septic systems?

The horsey set:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkton,_Maryland
per the google map (HERE) Monkton is well under an hour
There aren't a lot of home choices under $350,000 and none are new(er) ranchers LINK.

You'll need to visit, to drive around looking ...and meeting people.
Budget a week.

Virginia would not be an option. Pennsylvania might be.

Stay out of VA if working in downtown Baltimore, you will never see your home, the commute is ridiculous. Look in Baltimore, Carroll and Harford Counties (has gotten a little pricey too), even PA for that price range. VA would be more than $350K.

Rural is relative (parts of Severn/Gambrills seem rural compared to AA county, but not next to a town on the Eastern Shore), but here are a couple tips:

Bel Air and surrounding towns in Harford Co
Severn! fits the price range, check near Telegraph Road, Stevenson Road; quick jaunt to the airport
Mount Airy (Carroll Co)
Lutherville was mentioned; at $350,000 the house may need some work and not newer
Cub Hill (not exactly rural, but good bang for your buck)

If you truly mean "newer" as in last 10-15 years, try New Freedom, PA.

Wow..ya'll certainly gave me alot of areas to look. Ok to answer a few questions...
Why VA...ok we moved from SC to IL 4 yrs ago..our "kids" live in Atl so the closer I can get to them the better.
What I define as rural...ok we live in a small town population 2100. We are surrounded by corn fields. Love the small town feel...everyone is friendly and will be there if you need a hand. You don't find that in the city.
I've looked at homes in PA and you're right prices are lower...might be a good option.
Thank you so very very much for everyone's help!!

I'll call that airport access. An extra 50 road miles if driving not so much.
Pointing south toward DC though is at best suburbia... and very expensive.

Might be best option.

The North/Central Baltimore suburbia (same map link as above) still allows a simple commute.
A similar time gets you out to Lower Pennsylvania like New Freedom LINK
Houses are more affordable but not many new(er) ranchers.
