Exactly. Crab legs are not a Maryland thing. Blue Claw Crabs are. They are the BEST.

Most crab houses this time of year have suppliers in Texas or Louisiana. It's the same crab and as long as it's steamed and seasoned Maryland style. You won't notice a difference no matter what anyone says.

Blue crab legs do not really have much meat. You get the meat under the shell and in the claws.

Good crabhouses: Schultz's, Skipjacks, Mr. Bill's Terrace Inn, Costas Inn, Conrad's (all in Baltimore County)

In addition to the above crab houses, there is Al's Seafood restaurant on Eastern Blvd in Essex, and Bo Brooks in the Canton neighborhood of southeast Baltimore.

There's a difference, though they are the same crab. Anything now is from Louisiana. Then we'll get some NC crabs as well. I live on the coast and you can tell the difference between the local ones and the Chesapeake bay ones, especially the river crabs from the Why, Choptanke, etc... so typically you will pay a premium for those.

As far as crab legs, they are typically snow crab leg clusters from the west coast. Since they are frozen anyway they are available all year.

I'm only familiar with the local places so if your in Ocean City later in the season, Crab Alley will typically have the Chesapeake crabs if you don't get the all you can eat ones.

Wherever you go, get them by te dozen instead of the all you can eats if you want the better quality.

Dungeness crabs are available right now in Oregon. They are delicious steamed, very meaty with a very mild, sweet flavor.
A few years ago we went fishing in southern Oregon. We caught a 20 lb Chinook and trapped about 20 crabs. We had a wonderful feast! it's a bit of work pulling the meat out of the crabs but is so worth it.
