This is a really big deal. The city may actually loose historical archives forever if they did not back them up.

Leaving democrats in charge of anything is a real disaster.

Anonymous hackers breached the city of Baltimore's servers two weeks ago. Since then, those servers' digital content has been locked away — and the online aspects of running the city are at an impasse.
Government emails are down, payments to city departments can't be made online and real estate transactions can't be processed.

Baltimore must pay one way or another for electing incompetent democrats.

That's what should be done. Paying ransom is a losing strategy. In the meantime, they should fire the Information Officer who did not create a viable disaster recovery scheme.

Evidently this is not your "everyday" hack.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/25/u...baltimore.html

For those without accesss to the NYT:

Not all cities would have the resources to prevent or fix this level of hacking. Too bad the NSA didn't offer to send someone over to clean up its s***.

Paying ransom to release your data
makes sense when weighed against
the cost of municipalities spending
millions of dollars on "experts" who
are constantly getting (cyber) doors
slammed in their faces as they search
for the high-jackers.

A report came out today that Baltimore City has
spent 18 million dollars on fighting the ransomware
and restoring service. Does that make fiscal sense
when the hijackers only asked for $77,000.00?

Jack Young failed his first big test. Bigly.

Paying the hackers sets a terrible precedent and also means they can get back in again if they want. It also entices other hackers to come at Baltimore. Or they can sell off how to do it to other folks.

The track record in paying ransomware is not good. It usually gets you a partial restoration and a demand for more. Even if they do a full restoration how do you know they don't have a new backdoor into it that they can activate whenever they want.
