Well, I am one of Baltimore's biggest supporters but not sure I would just get up and walk anywhere in town at night.

I walk around my neighborhood at night -- usually down the main drag, but I've walked down Scott Street late at night with no ill effects. On the other hand, most people around here know that I own a small restaurant and am therefore broke.

Wow, is this statement misleading. In fact, Baltimore is one of the least safe mid sized city in America based on the crime index on this very website.

bbest--I'm not sure you really meant that you walk all over the city at night and never had a problem. I'll betcha you walk in certain areas of the city anytime you want. I am very glad you have never had a problem. We all wish that were true. If you walk alone in some areas at night, your risks go way up.

And I am not sure that Baltimore is as safe as any other mid-sized city (though at over 600,000, it probably is considered a large city). I agree that parts of it are generally safe. At night, I would want to hug real close to the MICA campus in Bolton Hill, though.
There are parts of Baltimore where I would not go unless: I was in police uniform, with a gun and radio--even in broad daylight.

Even that might not be safe! I'm sure everybody heard that story a couple of weeks ago about someone actually jumping out of the bushes and shooting a police officer in Baltimore. Crazy.

A police officer was shot just this afternoon in West Baltimore, despite being accompanied by a partner. Details are sketchy, but apparently one suspect was shot and another shot it out with police and escaped.

There's another thread on Bolton Hill here you should check out. It's probably on page 2 or 3. Muggings are frequent, but it's still where most of the MICA students live...though some live in Mt. Vernon (prettier, somewhat safer) or Hampden (though you have to drive to campus). If you choose Bolton Hill, live as close to campus as possible, as far east of Bolton St. as possible (Eutaw Place is absolutely the farthest west you should go, but even that's too far), and as far south of North Avenue as possible.

Thanks for the very helpful geography lesson, Lumerian Feast. I had forgotten about the MICA shuttle which could make living in another neighborhood a possiblity. People at MICA have referred to the "MICA bubble", meaning that the area immediately surrounding MICA is "relatively" safe.

It was exactly for those reasons of geography that I made the recommendations that I did. Good luck.

Man I guess I've been lucky. I'm relatively new here but haven't been afraid. I walk around Federal Hill, Fells pt., Canton and Paterson Park visiting bars and restaurants all the time. I've never even been appraoched except by the ramdom homeless person.
