I thought about it and I just couldn't resist:
Architectural History
Mount Vernon is home to some of the most beautiful and well-preserved 19th century architecture on the East Coast of the United States. The centerpiece of the neighborhood is the area around the Washington Monument, where stately palatial homes face onto four small parks that radiate from the monument. The parks, which have survived almost intact, are considered to be the finest existing urban landscapes by the beaux-arts architectural firm of Carrere & Hastings, who also designed the New York Public Library, portions of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and the residence that houses the Frick Collection. Elsewhere in the neighborhood are many older apartment buildings and three- and four-story rowhouses; most of the latter were originally single-family dwellings. Though many have been broken up into multiple apartments, a growing number are being restored back to single family use.

*Hold your google jonjj! I'm sure if you search long enough you'll find a book on Pittsburgh architecture.*
Pittsburgh actually does have lots of really impressive architecture that you won't see in any recently-built cities. The fortunes made in the steel and mining industries, and the large financial institutions that arose to help manage them, resulted in some amazing buildings and private homes. I can't imagine what it would cost to build similar structures today.

Pittsburgh is a gorgeous city. And like rudy_d says above, some of those structures can never be duplicated -- that kind of craftsmanship is long gone, sad to say.

I live in Brooklyn. There were 8 murders within walking distance of my house last year. There hasn't been one literally outside of my window since summer '06 - I heard the shots and the scream from that one.

In case you hadn't noticed, most of Baltimore isn't made up of DC yuppies and other nice rich white people. The Baltimore you know isn't the only one that exists.

Unfortunately I agree with you and avoid Brooklyn. It is easy to do because it is so far off the beaten path for me. It has potential with it's location but it definitely is an area to avoid. Sorry I feel that way but I do.

Sorry I feel that way but I do. I hope things improve there. And to be fair to Brooklyn, I do avoid that entire area including the sections in the county also. So, it is not just that particular neighborhood.

What an ignorant thing to say. I live and own a business in Pigtown and we certainly don't have people killing each other outside anyone's window. That was incredibly unnecessary and rude.

Sorry for offending you- it was rude of me to assume those areas are the most violent. I am obviously ignorant of Pigtown- the only time I ever go over there is to visit the good people of Housewerks- and I love it in there. I used to have to go into the deep pockets of the west side every now and then on business and it was quite scary in areas. Same with parts of the east side north of Baltimore St. I was trying to figure out the geography of a poster who I felt was exaggerating the crime situation only to put Baltimore in a poor light. Again- apologies.

No need to apologize. I'm trying to avoid Brooklyn myself by moving out as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I can't afford to live in any of Baltimore's safe zones, so me and my family will be leaving the city entirely.
