Although its run into some problems politically in the past, it finally seems like there is a strong proposal to support an expansion of Baltimore's mass transit system. Currently, MDOT is conducting studies to determine
which of seven proposed studies would allow for an expansion to the current system, If you click on the link, you'll see detailed maps for MDOT's seven possible lines for its north-south corridor, with every plan featuring a stop in the heart of Towson as well as downtown. Four of these proposals feature a BRT (bus rapid transit) plan, two more features light rail transit (LRT), one of which includes tunnels, and another features heavy rail and essentially would serve as an expansion to the Metro Subway.

So, please vote and express your thoughts about which of these services would work best for the city, through growth of jobs, businesses, and residents, along with the potential negative effects that a new line could provide, such as road congestion, noise, and crime.

Alternative 4 is by far the best choice, because it would be the fastest (due to being entirely grade separated) and also would serve Penn Station and perhaps another location in Midtown, such as Mount Vernon Square. Of course, it would be by far the most expensive choice as well. Alternative 1 is pretty good, because at least it has some tunnel alignments. But if you're going to go underground anyway, you might as well get more bang for your buck by going under Penn Station instead of Old Town.

Alternatives 2, 3, and 5 are glorified bus routes, which have the virtue of being inexpensive to implement (just do some upgrades to the bus service that exists now, and call it a day), but the drawbacks of getting stuck in traffic, even while using dedicated lanes (which at least are better than using general lanes). I'd pick 5 above the other two, because it serves JHU as well as Penn Station. Then I'd pick 3.

Under the idea that the shortest distance between any two points is a straight line, we should drop Alternatives 6 and 7 from further study.
