An off-duty Howard County sheriff's deputy was near bars on South Charles Street around 12:14 a.m. Friday, when he was shot, according to the Howard County Sheriff's Office and Baltimore City police. The 23-year-old man was taken to Shock Trauma, where he died, police said.

The sheriff's office identified the deputy shot as Deputy Ryan Demby, who was sworn in on March 20. He received his badge from his father, Deputy 1st Class Sam Demby.

City police said a verbal fight took place before the shooting. Police said they do not think Demby was involved in the dispute, and they have not said whether they believe he intervened.

Such a tragedy. Glad I got out of Baltimore when I did. What are Baltimore City Democrats going to do about this? Besides pay off squeegee kids to not be criminals, that is.

The perp was denied bail. WBAL reported the perp was deployed to Iraq from Oct 2006 to Dec 2007 and has PTSD. He was a Logistic Specialist in the Army.

Nothing. The police haven't cracked down on illegal car meets, although the media says otherwise. It's spreading to Baltimore County.

I used to frequent Mothers on game day and often go to rooftop restaurant at the Cross Street Market. The last time I was in that area, my party and I started to call it a night at around 11pm. I very rarely go out in Baltimore's "entertainment districts" after 11pm. You can almost feel the crowd change to a more younger and often rowdy crowd depending on the time of year and weather. This is a sad sad incident. Fed Hill used to be considered one of the more safer districts to hang out in Baltimore....

There used to be a time when people used to do this on the highways..particularily the I-70 spur at one or two o'clock in the morning and where the participants tried to avoid traffic and police so that they coudl have the roads to themselves. This was the era from say the Fonz and Happy Days and drag racing to Vin Diesel in Fast and Furious. Somewhere after that it became fashionable to do these antics at any time of the day and in the middle of downtown and populated areas. I wonder what changed
