I have heard Maryland referred to as a high tax area. Looking it up it doesn't seem as if the state income tax or property taxes are that much more than average - are city taxes in Baltimore high?

Baltimore is the fourth most taxed city in America, if I recall correctly.

Correct! Baltimore City is very high taxed. Property taxes are crazy out of control. The millage per 100.00 is below. Bawlmore is the highest in the state.

BALTIMORE CITY 2.288
BALTIMORE COUNTY 1.10

The other item in Maryland one must review is the Piggyback Tax.
Maryland is the only state in the union that holds this type of tax.

Example: your state income tax is 4.75%, now depending upon your county, Montgomery County as the highest you will need to add anywhere from 50% to 80% of your state tax liability to the county.

The Free State might have been Free at one time, but not anymore!!!!

Maryland's 23 counties and Baltimore City levy a local income tax which we collect on the state income tax return as a convenience for local governments.

The local income tax is calculated as a percentage of your taxable income. Local officials set the rates, which range between 1.25 percent and 3.20 percent for tax year 2006.

2006 LOCAL TAX RATE CHART
Subdivision Rate
Allegany County .0293
Anne Arundel County .0256
Baltimore City .0305
Baltimore County .0283
Calvert County .0280
Caroline County .0263

St. Mary’s County .0300
Somerset County .0315

Hope this helps

In other words, if you can help it, get out of Maryland. The gov't is slowly taxing their citizens to the point of being totally broke. This state is a joke, but its where my family is, so I've gotta live with it.

I'm not disagreeing that the tax burden in MD (and particularly Baltimore City) is high--it is among the top in the nation (4th according to this link The Tax Foundation - Maryland's State and Local Tax Burden, 1977-2008).

However, MD also has the highest median household income income in the country, so there's a good chance that a person or family has more money after taxes living in MD than they would living in a lower tax state.

To say "get out of MD" because you don't like paying taxes may be right in principal, but wrong in practicality. Of course, a lot depends on one's personal situation.

I agree totally, but I know tons of people who have moved to PA, DE, and WV and commute each day to Maryland to work. Would I consider doing this, na! I'll pay the higher taxes to regain 2+ hours a day of my life back as opposed to spending that 2+ hours in traffic.

Maryland unfortunately is a democratic state, and yes, there are some conservative/moderate democrats...but the large part aren't and that means a lot of tax/spend policies. A general "let the gov't solve your problems" attitude resonates, and its real bad in Baltimore City.
