I'm going to Penn Station in a couple of weeks, and I usually drive, but thought I'd try the light rail this time. I noticed there's no stop for Penn Station from the North. Should I get off at the North Avenue or Mt. Royal stops and walk? If so, how long a walk is it? If not, any suggestions?

It's a pretty short walk (5-10 minutes) from the Mount Royal stop. Just head east/south on Mount Royal Avenue until you get to Charles Street. You could always wait there at the Mount Royal stop for a train heading to Penn Station, but I suspect it will be faster to walk.

Another option if you a little more ambitious is to get off at North Ave, cross over and catch #13 bus east bound two stops over to Charles Street and walk about three blocks down to Penn. Charles Street is a nice walk and buses run pretty frequently down North Ave.. there are one or two other buses than the #13 that run this route that are available as well. It also may be easier to access Penn coming in from the north down Charles Street as opposed to crossing Charles Street when walking from Mt. Royal (and sometimes Maryland Ave). That section can be treacherous at times as drivers race to get on I-83 at Charles Street.. many near misses.....
