They were the Whitest of White yuppies and not ghetto White guys like the ones you find in Lansdowne, Pigtown or Brooklyn either (ghetto White people don't exist in the DC metro, the closest thing is 15 year old White kids from rich families with teenage angst issues who listen to too much Rick Ross). A few years ago, no sane White person would literally be caught dead in Trinidad unless they were some drug-addicted black sheep from a well-to-due family from Chevy Chase gone astray and buying drugs.

In Baltimore, zero gentrification is going on in most hoods in the city. DC is a white collar city. DC, easily, is the fastest gentrifying big city in America. Baltimore is not safe for White yuppies, period. In DC, you have White yuppies walking the streets of NE and SE DC after midnight like they are walking through Bethesda at noon. Somehow, just somehow, I don't think White yuppies are walking up and down North Avenue or Park Heights or Edmondson Village or Cherry Hill at 2 in the morning.

Even in downtown Baltimore, there have been some recent very violent unprovoked attacks on White yuppies. Yes, you had the widely publicized iphone cam-recorded viral video incident of a White business man getting beat on by 12 year old Black girls (literally) waiting for the metro in DC. But the magnitude of such violent incidents directed at White yuppies that go down in Baltimore rarely occur in DC:

Yeah the white poor are practically nonexistent in DC. I read somewhere DC has the most extreme class homogeneity among Whites in the country. However when you expand to the DC metro area poorer whites can be found along Richmond Highway in Virginia, parts of PG and Southern Maryland.

With all the land they should be doing whatever they can to attract IT companies to open offices there.

The other issue I noticed, you see large groups of men walking about doing nothing in the morning and afternoon on a work day. This is intimidating to white business people looking to move in. Since you dont know if these groups will jump you for no reason.

With the Casino opening, I am not sure how much that will continue to bringing in more white business people to live.
Much of the city's problems could be solved with a reduction of property taxes.

It's dumb to be "anti-death penalty" in the first place. The fact you enjoy letting a terrorist whose murdered Americans or murderers who've killed innocent lives and raped little kids live for their crimes is a troubling thought.

I'm sure if you're "anti-death penalty" then you must respect all forms of life right; I take it you're a vegan?

If not, then you're a hypocrite.

That is not a concern solely of white people/professionals.. I know Asians and African Americans professionals(and Im sure most other ethnic groups) both white and blue collar.... mostly not from Baltimore, that have the same concerns.. If you work a 9-5 job or are have a job period.. you want to live in an area where people at a minimum are like you and employed, taking care of their property, etc and are altleast inclined to look out for one another and the neighborhood....Getting enough of these types of folks in one area is a challenge in the Baltimore without the DC style job market or having a fk'd up commute from the suburbs which is one of the drivers for folks wanting to move closer to their work and into the city in the first place and has helped DC.. Baltimore doesnt have those drivers as much....

There was a time when people did not mind guys on the corner.. but typically they were older blue collar types who may have retired and were simply shooting the breeze or neighbors talking before/after work at the corner store or bar.. That was a Baltimore tradition.. People knew each other.. spoke to one another and most importantly looked out for one another..(read Jane Jacobs..eyes on the street creates a healthy neighborhood) The old nosy neighbor was an amenity for most neighborhoods in term of crime/block watch during the day.. because they were home....Today... you have very few places where this is a desirable situation especially if its young able bodied folks are doing it all day everyday... 24/7.. if for no other reason, if they are so inclined, they can learn your schedule and can pretty much waltz into your home and unload everything while you are at work...not to mention having your wife or daughter coming home in the early evening by themselves after work.. Again, not all guys on the corner are near do wells.. but in Baltimore that does raise concerns among most who are familiar with the City...

Did you forget about a man going through nice neighborhoods in DC just a few months ago killing people with a hammer? I think in the last 10 years I can think of a handful of violent incidents against yuppies. Let's not act like it's some epidemic just because you saw a couple youtube videos. I know tons of yuppies in this city, and most of them walk around without any fear, because they've never experienced anything that scares them. Cities are cities, things happen, let's not act like Baltimore has some problem with crimes against yuppies that other cities don't have. I can guarantee you all the developers, new construction builders, and home rehabbers aren't too worried about your theory.

DC is gentrifying very fast, and much faster than Baltimore. But there are a ton of neighborhoods that are dramatically improving in Baltimore right now. It's easier to name the areas that aren't improving right now than the ones that are not improving. Central West Baltimore is not improving much right now, Brooklyn and Cherry Hill. The entire East side of Baltimore is gentrifying pretty darn quick right and that place was a war zone as well as many other areas.
It's completely true that there are areas worse than others, but that no matter where you live, anything can happen. So unfortunate that crazy guy in DC did that. We've got some great resources if you want to move into the Baltimore area and want crime maps. You can take a look at them here: Is Your Neighborhood Safe? Use Our Crime Checker -1stSecurityUSA.com

Baltimore is on the under-policed list of cities (Baltimore on the 'Under-policed' City List |1stSecurityUSA.com) so do keep that in mind when deciding to move to Baltimore.

However, we love Balitmore! Our main office is in Baltimore & we couldn't be happier.
