I have been to Federal Hill a few times, and find that some areas are more safe than others.

It seems the closer to the harbor is the safest, whereas the closer to Fort Ave. the more sketchy the area becomes. Is that correct?

Is there a cutoff street that is an unspoken boundary?

I am a young professional interested in moving to the area and walking to work at the Harbor. I would like to be in the safer areas that are still close to nightlife.

I also have the same question regarding Fells Point. Is there a zone of safer areas (ie between Eastern Ave. and the Bay). It seems upper Fells Point places are more affordable, is that due to decline in neighborhood?

Anyhelp from those familiar with the area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Upper Fells Point/Washington Hill/ Butchers Hill/ Patterson Park are all north and east of Fells Point. They are all considered transitional neighborhoods--much better than they were 15 years ago. You can usually get a bargain if you look hard enough. In terms of crime, they are no less or more crime-free than Fells Point itself. But, they are away from the water and further away from downtown in some cases. Look at the sticky at the top of the forum for information on each of the areas. Spend time in each, both day and night. You will be your best advisor and find what you are comfortable with. In answer to your question of decline, the opposite is true. All of those areas have made tremendous progress but still need some work. In time, your investment will pay off but not for the short-term.
In terms of Federal Hill, anything along Fort Street going to Fort McHenry is perfectly fine. That actually is probably one of the safest areas in the city. Water taxi service is available from a number of locations around there.

Pretty much all of federal hill is okay. I live on fort avenue near the border with locust point and its fine (well as fine as baltimore gets i suppose). Federal hill is bordered on 3 of 4 sides by water, locust point, and the inner harbor which are all nice areas. The fourth border (west side of federal hill) is the only part I might call sketchy, but its not terrible or anything.
