We are moving to the area. I need info on safe family areas to live in Baltimore. My husband will be working along the 95 close to columbia so we could live in alot of areas. I need good schools, safe neighborhoods. I usually shy away from Big cities, due to schools and crime, is baltimore different are there good diverse areas?

baltimore is argubably the most violent big city in the country. it has a higher murder rate than NYC and DC. my suggestion would be in howard county where columbia is. howard county has md's best schools and low crime.

If you're husband is fortunate enough to work close to Columbia then, by all means, live in Columbia. It's a nice planned community and I've only heard good things about the schools.

Living close to your work is a very big plus in this area, given all the traffic. There are lots of people in this area who wish there job was in Columbia!

I don't know what the policy is about links in posts, but Howard County Police has an interactive crime map -- use it. There are parts of Columbia that have far worse crime and drug problems than parts of Baltimore. The neighborhood I live in (in Baltimore City) has less violent crime than more upscale areas, yet it seems to have a terrible reputation, at least on this message board....for whatever reason. Neighborhoods change. Don't make decisions using outdated information.

Baltimore City Police also has an interactive crime map - just do a Google search for them, they're easy to find.
