My boyfriend and I are relocating to Maryland and I've heard that Canton is a safe place to live. Any thoughts on the area? Or other suggestions?

Canton is in the sticky above. It is a nice area. For other neighborhoods, check the sticky at the start of the Baltimore thread.

Buying or renting? It's a pretty big mix of young and old in Canton. Yuppies who have moved to the area rehabs and the elderly who have been in Canton for 50+ years.

It's fun if you're young, the bar scene at the square is nice and the park is great. If you're ok with the atrocious parking situation (the city was designed with roads to hold maybe 1 car per household, now on average you have 3 per household), the average buying price being in the mid 200s for something that doesn't need major renovations and average rental price for a 3br of at least $1500, the ridiculous taxes and yuppies peeing in your yard, I'd say it's a great place to live.

Thanks for the info Jonjj and Davecj! Its been quite helpful!

We will be renting for now, and until we find an area that we really like. I'd rather pay the higher prices, if it means being in a safer area. I like that there is a park near by and will take advantage of the bar scene! Thanks again for all the help!

Canton is great for young professionals. I am actually looking there two. I have also lived in Federal Hill and Locust Point and found those areas to be young and fun. Federal Hill, Fells Point (certain areas), Locust Point and Canton are all fun and safer spots!Good luck

Canton is one neighborhood among many in southeast Baltimore that is very livable. You can walk, yes walk, not swim, to the other sections and downtown perfectly fine.
