My daughter will be going to JHU at the Bloomberg School (by Johns Hopkins Hospital) for 1-2 years. How can we best spend a long weekend checking out the housing options (after we visit the Hopkins housing office, anyway)?

Safety (both neighborhood and building) is paramount - she may or may not be able to find a roommate, but she will be bringing her dog. She will have a car, but the JHU shuttle seems to be convenient since the hospital stop is right at her school. Should we be looking at apartment buildings, talking to real estate agents that manage property, or just driving/walking around? If it was your daughter, how would you undertake the search?

Thanks for the help.

Default craigs list, to start

I have always had good luck finding apartments on Craigslist, particularly because you can sort properties by whether or not dogs or allowed.

The JHU shuttle is great-- frequent and free and goes from Homewood to JHMI stopping in Mount Vernon along the way.

Safety, trust your instincts. If you haven't been to Baltimore, just be prepared for the landscape to shift drastically from block to block. Charles Village, around the Homewood campus, is an area with a lot of students and has several shuttle stops. Mount Vernon might be a possibility.

If she is working at/near the hospital, Butchers Hill and Patterson Park would be both convenient and safe. There is a shuttle running from Butchers.
