Hi

I am a 23yr. female who is moving into the Baltimore area in June. I will be teaching in the school district and also going to school at night at John Hopkins. I don't know the area at all and I am looking for a safe neighborhood to move into. I would like to be near JHU - help!
M Kelly

You're in luck! I work with new teachers in Baltimore City!

You may want to consider looking for a place in the Charles Village area. It's within walking distance to JHU and there are a lot of students and young professionals who live there. Its central location also provides for easy access to other areas of the city.

Another area that's not too far from JHU is Hampden. It's an interesting, funky area that's to the west of JHU.

May I suggest browsing the local forums and posting threads asking opinions about neighborhoods at this site?
Great people for the most part!

I lived there for one summer and loved it immediately. I hope to move back soon! Good luck!

You want Charles Village. Right on the JHU campus and a very cool place to live. I give you credit for teaching in the City school system. You will surely have plenty of war stories to tell after a few years, hell, after a few weeks.

There is an apartment building on the corner of St. Paul and 25th St that rents ONLY to Baltimore City teachers for lower rents. My sister lives there (she teaches at Montebello Elementary). PM me if you need more info.

I am a teacher in Baltimore City and lived in Charles Village for three years. Best time to find an apartment is in May when the JHU students go home for the summer. I'm going to continue recommending that people teaching in Baltimore look into the Charters and Transformation schools. Get hired through the city and then contact the schools directly instead of waiting for a placement. Lots of them are looking to hire now. They are smaller, have better student/teacher ratios, and tend to create better learning environments.

Dear Bronxbound,
I interviewed with Baltimore City in April and received a Commitment of Employment contract with the district. I had 30 days to sign and return the contract, which I did. I mailed the district all of the required documents, and am now waiting for my placement. Seeing that you work for Baltimore City, I was just curious as to when I should expect to find out my placement/when do they normally have the placement fairs? I talked to them on the phone recently, and they said they are still looking for a date to have the fair. Do you suggest I just wait, or should I contact the schools? Any advice would be wonderful! Thanks so much!

With your spelling and grammer you will fit in just perfectly with the Baltimore City school system.
