Aloha,

My wife and I are moving to the Baltimore area in the next few months.
Gonna miss Hawaii but how much paradise can one stand?

We are looking to buy a home on the water and like the Annapolis area but are open to whatever. Needs to be commuteable to downtown harbor (1-2 hours drive?). Can 500,000 get us a place?

A few other questions...

1) One hears about crime is it really that bad?

2) I'm a musician... so where are some good clubs or art/music areas?

3) Do folks kayak on the bay and how is the water quality these days?

4) What is the best way to travel to DC and/or NYC?

5) Would you describe the area as liberal or conservative?

6) What is the price for: A gallon of gas, a quart of milk, a movie?

Where can I find more excellent info on the area?

THANKS

Tom

One other question/idea...

Can one live on a boat at the Inner Harbor?

Can one live in one of those high rises (condos?) and go
without a car? I here of terms like MARC and Amtrack...
is it like BART and MUNI in San Francisco?

I really don't think you should consider living anywhere east of the west coast of California. You may be in for a few surprises.

Good luck finding waterfront property for 500K! You can get close to the water for that amount but not waterfront. Crime is a big issue in Baltimore but, once you learn the perimeters it's easy to avoid for the most part. Annapolis also has a crime problem but it doesn't compare to Baltimore and is more isolated. Baltimore has a lively local music scene with numerous venues downtown. Annapolis has a few upscale live music venues but is more of a small town. Kayaking on the bay? Not so much, and the water quality leaves much to be desired. Chesapeake bay is getting more federal funding now but it has been in sharp decline for decades. Travel from Baltimore to d.c. either by train or car (car is a huge hassle, especially during rush hour, the train gets you there in under an hour. Baltimore to NY, 4 hours by car, a little less by train. Baltimiore is "relatively" liberal. Annapolis tends to be a bit more conservative, of course that depends on how you define the terms. A gallon of gas TODAY, around $2.60, a gallon of milk, $3.65, a movie ticket, $8 - $12 depending on where you go. Check out baltimore city paper online for music, arts info, Baltimore Magazine covers culture, dining, etc. realtor.com with give you condo costs for waterfront.

That was pretty funny! But I am originally from Detroit so while
there will be some culture shock...

THANKS for the info's

If there was one place _near_ the water within 1-2 hours of downtown that you would look at
what would it be?

Online I see lots of boats... does anyone live onboard full time?

Thanks!
