Mount Vernon is VERY livable. You are close to everything. I LOVED living there. The biggest downfall is parking. It really sucks. I often had to park blocks away from my place. Also, each street has different parking rules. Some streets have meters where you have to move by a certain time in the morning. Some streets you can park anytime as long as you have a permit. Some streets you can park anytime except on certain days. All the different rules got confusing and I got many tickets that way. Even got towed. But once u get the system down it's pretty cool. Also, because of the location, you sometimes get some suspicious people who don't even live in the area. But with all of the other activity and people out and about at all hours of the day and night, I felt pretty safe on the main streets. People seemed to look out for each other around there too. Im a single female who lived alone.

I thought the biggest problem is the nightclub in the basement of the old Hotel Belvedere. I've heard about it in Chicago.

Why did you move? Parking get to be too much hassle?

Hopefully the liquor board will strip it of its bottle club license. The "padlocking" is welcome but overdue and might last only for a year if the club comes up with a plan--I read somewhere the problematic liquor store in Reservoir Hill that was padlocked has since reopened. Anyone know how that's working out for the neighborhood?

How is Eden's Lounge on Eager Street doing? More upscale I hear.

I work in Mt Vernon and it is a great area. Im on Charles just south of Read. Lots to do. Great bars, and places to eat in the area. Rent in the area tends to be lower than Fells or Canton, but chances are its been years since the apartment has been updated. Id live in Mt Vernon. I ended up in Roland Park though because I needed a bigger space. As far as parking, luckily we have a lot right across the street from work and we get discounted parking rates. Parking on the street could be tough.

Mt. Vernon is livable enough relative to anywhere else in Baltimore. Safety is probably a little more of a concern than Federal Hill or Canton, but still reasonably good. Parking is a pain but not all that much different than any other of the urban neighborhoods, you'll need a sticker as others have mentioned. If you need to live in Baltimore and like the feel of Mt. Vernon compared to areas like Fed Hill, Fells Point or Canton, go for it.

I have heard quite a few comments about the LBGT community around that area, but how is the area for straight singles? As a single guy, a robust population of 25-30 year old available ladies, and/or popular nightspots which attract them would be a bit of a plus.
